JOHANNA ARZOZ

My name is Jo, as in Johanna - Ione in Basque - and although I live in London I was born in Pamplona, the capital of the ancient Kingdom of Navarre in Spain, of which Shakespeare affirmed ironically “Navarre will surprise the world”. And with that quality of amazement for the convulsive reality of our times, comes my early photographic vocation…

A vocation which I have developed up until now in various facets professional and artistic as a Photojournalist reporting with a social focus and through Portraiture of the protagonists of alternative stories, driven towards making people think, reflect and reevaluate our actions under this lethal phase of late-stage Capitalism.

At the moment, I am working on a number of projects concurrently both in the Basque Country and the UK: A register of the memory of Witches, the hunt of the figure of the ‘monstrous’ Green Man/Woman in architecture and folklore, documenting Environmental Collapse and Fantastical Portraits via fusion. All of these form part of a larger overall project of work entitled Dark Side, an expressionist vision in monochrome/black and white, of my wildest, rawest, grittiest dreams, were gothic narrative, dark ecology, science fiction and social critique are combined.

Another end to this world is possible…and the open eye of my camera is ready to document it by challenging my creative limits.
